How Treatment Of Anxiety Works On Several Different Levels

Treatment of panic and anxiety conditions is basically carried out in three different ways. Drugs are used to treat the symptoms of the condition in the short term, and these are often the only treatment which is applied. As any of the other treatments are outside of mainstream medicine, they are often not considered by orthodox practitioners. Therapies which have a chance of curing the condition are typically those which reach into the mind to try to locate the underlying condition. There are also behavioral therapies which report positive results.

It is accepted at the start that drug treatments have no potential for curing the condition which causes panic attacks. They can, however, prevent the attacks from occurring. When the patient is treated with Xanax or Citalopram panic attacks are prevented from occurring by chemical changes in the brain. The part of the brain which houses the cause of the panic still sends the signal, but the signal can reach the parts of the brain where the panic is usually felt.

These drug treatments have a mixed record of success. If they are taken for long enough to take effect, and the dosage is high enough, they nearly always have some effect in reducing the incidence of panic attacks. What is not consistent is the side effects which the treatment can cause, some of which can be severe. There is nearly always a dryness in the mouth, but many people also suffer tiredness and irritability, and some even find that they are unable to work while taking the drugs.

For a long term solution to the problem, another way needs to be found. So far, medical science has not been able to offer any hope in this direction, but many complimentary therapies have achieved positive results. The panic appears to have been caused by the negative emotional charge attached to a memory buried within the mind, and this memory can be stimulated to cause great anxiety. Many cases of anxiety syndrome have been relieved or cured by taking the patient back to this memory in their mind, and somehow removing the emotional charge from it.

The other treatment of anxiety which is achieving good results is cognitive behavioral therapy, and this can also be carried out in conjunction with the other treatments. The issue of whether or not you carry on taking drug treatments while you are undergoing this type of behavioral therapy is a contentious one. It is probably better not to be taking the drugs if your body can cope with the withdrawal, and you are not going to suffer any devastating effects such as losing your job. In the real world, this is not always possible, and there is no real harm in adding a different treatment of anxiety.
