Facts About Generalized Anxiety Disorder Treatment

When feelings of anxiety occur frequently and in a way that makes it difficult to carry on normal daily activities, it may be due to something called “generalized anxiety disorder”. Treatment for this condition generally requires the intervention of medical help, ranging from medication to therapy.

Generalized anxiety disorder, or GAD, is different from panic disorders although their symptoms may be similar. Typical symptoms include chronic fatigue, muscle tension, restlessness, sweating, inability to focus and trembling. Shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat and nausea may also be experienced. Not everyone who suffers from GAD will exhibit the same symptoms, but one is prevalent with all: constant anxiety. This anxiety can present itself over small, inconsequential matters or larger concerns. For many people, this type of feeling is all they have ever known since GAD often begins at an early age.

Treating GAD can be challenging since the causes are not fully understood. It is known to be a mental health issue, and can involve numerous interactions of chemicals in the brain. Stress of everyday life, heredity and our surroundings are also components that affect this disorder. Before treatment begins, tests are performed to confirm the diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder. Treatment will then be determined, often consisting of a combination including antidepressant drugs and counseling.

Finding the right combination of treatment methods can be tricky. Different people respond differently to various drugs, for example. Antidepressants are drugs that actually affect the chemicals in the brain that are believed to play a large part in GAD and include such names as Prozac and Zoloft. Drugs that serve as anti-anxiety medications, such as Buspirone, are able to be used on a continual basis, although some individuals experience uncomfortable side effects. In severe cases of GAD, benzodiazepines may be administered on a short term basis. Due to their addictive nature, they are used sparingly.

Therapy through counseling is a valuable tool for treating GAD. Helping individuals to change thought and behavior patterns from negative to positive can assist them in gaining perspective and control over situations that previously would overwhelm them. In addition to medications and therapy, people with GAD can make changes in their own lives that will improve their condition. Getting plenty of exercise, eating healthy, getting quality sleep, finding ways to relax and avoiding alcohol and drugs will bring more control into lives.

One of the most important aspects of generalized anxiety disorder treatment is that the best results are seen with early detection. If anxiety begins to interfere with normal life activities, it is time to see a doctor to begin treatment of this condition.
